Roundworm Life Cycle in Adult Dogs
Adult male and female worms mate. The female worm will excrete thousands of eggs per day into the environment. Depending on the temperature, these eggs will become infective in 2 to 4 weeks, at which point they contain the infective third-stage larvae.
After roundworm eggs are eaten by a suitable host, they will hatch and release L3 into the host’s gut. The L3 will travel through the blood to the lungs and then into the alveoli after entering the intestine. verminous pneumonitis occurs when this occurs in large numbers of puppies. L3 can take one of two paths after entering the alveolus proper.
Tracheal migration. Larvae that ascend the trachea are swallowed and travel to the intestine, where they will mature to adults.
Somatic migration. Larvae that reenter the alveolar blood vessels travel to the muscles or organs, where they become encysted and their development is arrested. The condition known as larva migrans is a result of the migration pathway being followed in humans.
How Does the Vet Diagnose a Parasitic Infection?
The type of worm affects the method of diagnosis. The vet can use a blood test. This type of test won’t work for other parasites. Tapeworms are easy to spot in the dog’s stool. The best diagnostic tool is an exam of the feces. During your in-office appointment with the vet, you may be asked to bring a stool sample or a sample from your puppy.
The earlier the vet finds and diagnoses the problem, the better your pup’s chances are for a full recovery. Puppies and dogs with a heartworm infection need an early discovery. If left unaddressed, this type of parasites can cause serious or life threatening problems. Do not expect your dog to have any parasites in his stool. They will need to have a blood test and an echocardiogram.
How Can a Vet Treat a Parasitic Infection?
Treatment is based on the specific parasites. The first choice is prevention. An oral medication may be prescribed by the vet to destroy the worms. Your puppy may need more than one round of deworming medication. One round can destroy the adult worms, while another takes care of the remaining eggs.
During their first vet visit, your puppy may need a deworming treatment. Immediate deworming is a necessity to keep some dogs healthy. Discuss the options with the vet.
The treatment of heartworm is more complex than other types of parasites. A series of injections, antibiotics, and anti-Inflammatory drugs may be needed instead of one oral medication. During treatment, your dog will have activity restrictions.

How Do Dogs Get Roundworms?
There are many ways that dogs get roundworms.
From the mother.
Puppies can be born with them. Roundworm cysts can be found in the body’s tissue. There is a chance that the encysted larvae can cross the placenta into an unborn puppy. Puppies can be passed on to their mothers through milk.
From the environment.
Adult roundworms get passed into the environment through a dog’s feces. Other dogs can become sick by sniffing or licking the feces that have been contaminated.
From eating animals that have been contaminated.
Several small animals, such as rodents, birds, earthworms and some insects, can act as carriers for roundworm eggs. The eggs never mature in these animals because they are not the roundworm’s normal host. Eggs can grow into roundworms if your dog eats transport hosts.
Diagnosis & Treatment
Roundworms can be diagnosed by examining a stool sample for eggs. Most vets assume that roundworms are present since they are very common in young puppies. De-worming is a regular practice for young puppies.
Adult dogs are treated with a de-wormer. This treatment is only effective for worms that are fully grown in a dog’s gut. It is important to give a full course of de-wormer in order to eradicate the roundworms. How long to continue treatment will be given by your vet.
The most commonly prescribed drugs for roundworms are:
There is a Drontal Plus, Heartgard Plus, Worm X, and Iverhart Plus are included.
