A mother dog can turn on her puppies. This may happen because she feels unwell herself, or because a puppy seems too weak to be worthy of her care, or simply because of a lack of maternal instinct. She may have seen this behavior from the moment she gave birth.

The puppies need to be stimulated to urinate and defecate. It is up to you to do it if you don’t want to. You can use cotton balls with warm water or a small amount of Jelly on your finger. Rub this over their genitals until they urinate and defecate. Puppies and their whelping box should be clean to avoid infections. Don’t expose them to everyone because their immune systems are weak and not yet developed.

When the bitch is done whelping, many vets would like to give her an injection to close down the uterus and promote milk let down. This will make sure that all the afterbirths have been expelled. These are the parts of the body that attach the fetus to the body of the developing puppy. Many bitches will eat the afterbirths, which is natural and will do no harm if you break the cord to leave a good length attached to the puppy.
